Colville, WA, October 7, 2019 – United States Marine Corps Veteran Matt Horner won the drawing for the latest in a series of patriotic quilts made by local quilters Valerie Lamont and Judy Lockner. Horner served with the Marines from 1975-80, stationed stateside in Arizona and North Carolina, as well as Iwakuni Air Station on Honshu Island in Japan, about 30 miles south of Hiroshima. The son of a Marine who served in the Second World War as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician, Horner was a Ground Support Equipment Mechanic, working on aircraft support equipment on the ground at air bases. The South California native says that his time in the Marines gave him the opportunity to travel the world, which he enjoyed. Horner worked as a diesel mechanic after he left the Marines and moved to the Kettle Falls area nearly twenty years ago. The drawing took place on September 21st at the Colville Veterans Stand Down.The quilt was presented to Horner by Liv Stecker, Tri County Economic Development District Veteran Service Coordinator.

Lamont and Lockner have created several other quilts that have all found homes with local veterans, including the most recent, which went to a Purple Heart recipient Cliff Cahoon. “We hope that the quilts will offer comfort and underline our appreciation for their many sacrifices” Lamont says of the program. 

Entries for the next Veteran Quilt drawing are being accepted now. We will be holding the drawing on November 9th at Northern Ales during a Veterans Day benefit concert, beginning at 7 PM. Veterans do not need to be present to win. Backyard BBQ in Kettle Falls will also be hosting their annual free prime rib dinner for veterans on November 9. 

If you would like to nominate a veteran or are a veteran yourself, you may submit an entry for the drawing at Northern Ales, or entry forms will be available at the TEDD office, 986 S Main, Colville, WA, 99114. You can also jump onto the TEDD website www.tricountyedd.com, and download an entry form and turn it into the office, email lstecker@teddonline.com or we will be accepting electronic entries through the TEDD Facebook page.
