“Only You Can Prevent Wildfires”

The United States Forest Service invites the public to join them in celebrating Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday on Friday, August 9 at two locations in Stevens County.

Smokey will be available for photos from 10:00-10:30 a.m. at the headquarters in Colville and from noon-12:30 p.m. at the Chewelah Farmers Market, weather permitting.

Forest Service staff will serve cake and offer members of the public Smokey Bear items 10 a.m. to noon at the Forest Headquarters, 765 South Main in Colville, Washington. The Forest Service booth at the Chewelah Farmers Market will provide games and Smokey Bear items from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Chewelah City Park located at the corner of North Park Street (U.S. 395) and East Lincoln Avenue.

For the past 75 years, Smokey Bear has been teaching generations of children how to prevent wildfires. As one of the most recognizable fictional characters, Smokey Bear has become the symbol of wildfire prevention and an American icon. Created in 1944, the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest running public service advertising campaign in United States history. With his slogans like “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,” children are learning about their roles and responsibilities in wildfire prevention.
